As the number of trains carrying Bakken crude oil through Skagit County has grown, so has concern over rail safety and potential environmental disasters.

Emergency responders and area officials want to better protect communities along the rail lines, and activists have made their views known, some comparing the cargo to weapons of mass destruction.

For everyone that is against the oil trains it seems you haven't done your research. First off, I see signs around here that say "No Exploding Oil Trains". Oil isn't explosive. If a disaster were to happen it would involve fire not an explosion.

Second, is the environmental issue. While there have been some rather minor spills from the oil trains, they are far better for the environment. For every tank car that is in the train that is two to three semi's that are off the road. While I support jobs, more trucks on the road means more exhaust and pollution. Not to mention trucks get into far more accidents than trains do. Be a far greater liklihood for disaster with a truck than a train.

Third, oil is vitally important to our society. It is much more than just fuel. Many products are make from petroleum. To sit here and complain about these trains is hypocritical. These trains equal jobs. They equal stability.

Is rail travel perfect? No it isn't. There will likely be some spills and some mishaps that are minor. I would much rather have it happen on the rails then on I-5 where it would have a far greater impact. New, safer rail cars are coming out all the time. It's time to let these trains come through. Let BNSF do their jobs. As an emergency responder myself I would rather not have hundreds or thousands more semi's on the road when one train can do the job. Do the math, 18 trains is far safer than the thousands of trucks that would be needed if it wasn't transported by rail. BNSF has a good safety record.
