ROCKPORT — The Skagit Valley is known for its patchwork of farms from the Skagit and Samish river deltas to the foothills of the North Cascades. But some say the area was once more lush, supporting a greater number of plants and animals.

Imagine an expanse of forestland, wetlands and waterways untouched by paved roads and buildings anchored to concrete foundations.
